  125. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  126. The information provided below is to help you start the program for
  127. your hardware configuration.  For more details about the operation of
  128. the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the
  129. program.

  131. Once installed (see below for installation procedure) AS-EASY-AS is
  132. started from DOS using the command:
  133.  
  134.  C:> ASEASY /Option1/Option2/Option3/.....     [ENTER]

  136. where Option1, Option2, etc.  are options specifying the type of
  137. memory to use, the type of graphics video adaptor, etc.  For a
  138. complete description of these options, please print and consult the
  139. on-disk user's manual.

  161. On-Disk Documentation
  162. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  163. The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN.  This is a
  164. ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.
  165.  
  166. Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is
  167. indeed on your default directory.  Then, to print this manual:
  168.  
  169. (1)  Make sure that the your printer is ON  and there is enough
  170.      paper in it (the manual is about 110 pages).
  171.  
  172. (2)  From the DOS prompt, type
  173.  
  174.      COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
  175.  
  176.      Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
  177.      then you need to use the command  COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
  178.      COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your
  179.      printer is connected to).

  200. ===== Installation =====================================
  201.  
  202.  
  203. The installation procedure for AS-EASY-AS is quite simple.  The
  204. package includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the
  205. entire process.  You will need about 1.2 MB of available disk space on
  206. the hard drive on which you plan to install AS-EASY-AS.
  207.  
  208. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
  209. AS-EASY-AS.
  210.  
  211.  
  212. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
  213.  
  214. To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
  215.  
  216.    o  Place the AS-EASY-AS distribution diskette in the
  217.       appropriate diskette drive.
  218.  
  219.    o  Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
  220.       For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
  221.       at the MS-DOS command, "a:" press ENTER and then type "install"
  222.       and press ENTER again
  223.  
  224.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  225.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  226.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.  The program
  227.       will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy the AS-
  228.       EASY-AS files to that directory.  If you received AS-EASY-AS on
  229.       two diskettes, you will need to insert Disk 2 in the diskette drive
  230.       when asked to do so.  The program will make no other changes;
  231.       specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys
  232.       files.
  233.  
  234.  
  235. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  236.  
  237. If you downloaded AS-EASY-AS from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  238. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  239. following steps.
  240.  
  241.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  242.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  243.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  244.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  245.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  246.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  247.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  248.       the package.
  249.  
  250.    o  Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted.  For
  251.       example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
  252.       the AS-EASY-AS package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would log to the C:
  253.       drive, change to the TEMPDIR directory, type  "install" (without
  254.       the double quotes), and then press ENTER.
  255.  
  256.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  257.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  258.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.  The program
  259.       will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy the AS-
  260.       EASY-AS files to that directory.  The program will make no other
  261.       changes; specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or
  262.       config.sys files.
  263.  
  264. When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
  265. delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed AS-EASY-AS
  266. (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.

  271. Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the documents
  272. (filename extension "doc", "txt" and "man") which have been installed.

  276. IMPORTANT Note(s):
  277.  
  278. If you Install and run AS-EASY-AS from a diskette, without Expanded
  279. memory (EMS), or if the /NE command line switch is used, and you remove
  280. the AS-EASY-AS program disk from the drive while the program is
  281. running, you will get an error message and will be instructed to
  282. re-insert the disk.

  285. ===== New Features =====================================
  286.  
  287. This section documents features that did not make it to the
  288. printed version of the addenda to the user's manual, as well as new
  289. enhancements and modifications to subsequent releases.
  290.  
  291.  
  292. Modifications in AS-EASY-AS  v5.70a
  293. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  294. 1.  Multivariate Regression
  295. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  296.     A new, powerful feature added to AS-EASY-AS v5.7 is multivariate
  297.     regression. The program may regress up to three independent
  298.     variables. When selecting the X range (under Data, Regression), up to
  299.     three columns of data may be selected. When you select Coefficients,
  300.     the submenu that appears prior to the actual coefficients, allows you
  301.     to select any of the Enabled three independent variables, which are
  302.     set by the program depending on the number of columns that have been
  303.     selected as the X range.  For SINGLE variable regression, only
  304.     Variable #1 should be enabled!
  305.  
  306.     As an example, assuming that all three independent variables are
  307.     used, the regression could result in a complex function like,
  308.  
  309.      f(x,y,z) = a + b1*x + c1*x^2 + d1*x^3 + e1*x^4 + m1*x^5 +
  310.                     n1*SQRT(x) + p1*LN(x) + r1*EXP(x) +
  311.                     b2*y + c2*y^2 + d2*y^3 + e2*y^4 + m2*y^5 +

  316.             where a, b1, c1,...n3, p3, r3 are coefficients
  317.             calculated by the data regression process
  318.  
  319.     Note that although in this example we use x,y,z as the variables, for
  320.     clarity, the general case (and AS-EASY-AS) refer to the three
  321.     variables as X1, X2 and X3, and the calculated coefficients are
  322.     labelled accordingly.
  323.  
  324.     It should also be noted that due to the complexity of the calculated
  325.     formula, AS-EASY-AS will not construct that formula as part of the
  326.     calculated output if the built formula string is to exceed the
  327.     maximum number of characters that may be accommodated in a single
  328.     cell.  Instead, a message that the formula is too large will be
  329.     displayed.
  330.  
  331. 2.  Color Attributes
  332. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  333.     Ranges of cells may now be assigned a user selected foreground and
  334.     background color using the /Range, cOlor command.
  335.  
  336. 3.  Color Printing
  337. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  338.     New printer drivers have been developed and included in the program,
  339.     including color printer drivers for the HP Deskjet 5xx series and the
  340.     Panasonic KX-Pxxxx series printers with the color option.
  341.  
  342. 4.  MenuCFG Program
  343. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  344.     In order to allow maximum flexibility, a new utility program is now
  345.     provided with AS-EASY-AS that permits the user to change the menu
  346.     structure and the menu commands used by the program.  Details on how
  347.     to use this program (MENUCFG.EXE), are provided in the text file
  348.     MENUCFG.DOC which should be extracted during the installation
  349.     process.
  350.  
  351.     It is important to note that changing the menu structure and/or the
  352.     menu commands is a very powerful option that should NOT be taken
  353.     lightly!  If you modify the menu file, macro based spreadsheets might
  354.     not work properly since they are based on the first letter of
  355.     commands and sequences that have now changed.  We strongly recommend
  356.     that before you attempt any modifications of the menu structure, you
  357.     make a copy of the original ASEASY.MNU file and store it in a safe
  358.     place.  That way, if you encounter problems with the newly created
  359.     file, you may always replace it with the one stored away.
  360.  
  361. 5.  3D Graph Type
  362. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  363.     A new type of 3D graph was added last minute, the Contour type.  If
  364.     selected, the program sub-divides each 3D facet which results in a
  365.     smoother color transition.
  366.  
  367.  
  368. Modifications in AS-EASY-AS  v5.70b
  369. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  370. 1.  The format of the values displayed in the X and Z axes in the 3D
  371.     graph, are controlled by the format of the cell containing the first
  372.     Z and first X values (first column and first row values), in the
  373.     selected data.
  374.  
  375. 2.  The font used in labeling the 3D graph axes was modified to give
  376.     the same perspective as the graph.
  377.  
  378. 3.  The menu structure is now loaded when the program is started and is
  379.     stored in EMS, thus making about 7k more conventional memory
  380.     available for storing worksheet data.
  381.  
  382. 4.  Three new keys are active when displaying a 3D graph, and after
  383.     selecting I to change the viewing parameters.
  384.  
  385.       A - Pressing A dynamically changes the width of the X-Axis
  386.       B - Pressing B dynamically changes the width of the Z-Axis
  387.       C - Pressing C dynamically changes the width of the Y-Axis
  388.  
  389. 5.  If the Range protection is ON, then the contents of protected
  390.     (locked) cells are NOT displayed in the panel area.  Instead, the
  391.     Word *Protected* is displayed when the cursor is on a locked cell.
  392.  
  393. 6.  A new command was implemented under the 3D Graph, Axis command.
  394.     The new, 'Bands' command allows the user to select how many colors to
  395.     be used in mapping the 3D facets when creating a 3D surface plot.
  396.  
  397. 7.  The commands displayed when the user presses I while a 3D graph is
  398.     displayed were re-positioned so that they are not overwritten by the
  399.     horizontal separating line when in VESA mode.
  400.  
  401. 8.  An error was corrected that would temporarily hide the contents of
  402.     cells when highlighting a range.  The extent of hiding would depend
  403.     on the width of the adjacent cells and the string content length.
  404.  
  405. 9.  A modification was made to the way the pointer is anchored if a
  406.     print range is highlighted and the period (.) key is pressed to
  407.     access the four corner cells of the range.  The highlighted range is
  408.     now re-positioned to maximize the viewed portion on the screen.
  409.  
  410. 10. The color DeskJet print driver was modified to eliminate the problem
  411.     of printing a solid black band when printing graphs with a DJ560.
  412.  
  413. 11. The painting direction when displaying a 3D surface graph, now
  414.     depends on the orientation of the graph, so as to give a better
  415.     perspective due to the way the hidden surfaces are treated.
  416.  
  417. 12. When entering a worksheet password, the entry is now masked and
  418.     asterisks are echoed, for increased security.
  419.  
  420. 13. If the user configuration color dialog is entered and the current
  421.     color is black on black, the box highlighting the selected color(s)
  422.     is now visible.
  423.  
  424. 14. New half-tone bands are now used when printing 3D graphs on a B&W
  425.     printer. (Earlier version used single half-tone pattern).
  426.  
  427. 15. A modification was made so that if a laserjet printer driver is
  428.     selected (under, /User, Config, Printer), the page length is
  429.     automatically set to 60 lines per page.  It should be noted that the
  430.     user may still override that and set a different page length under
  431.     /PrintTo, Printer, Options, Margins, Pagelength, if desired.
  432.  
  433. 16. A correction was made to avoid the problem of getting an illegal
  434.     print range if the user accidentally entered a special character
  435.     (@,>,<,...), while entering the print range, and then trying to
  436.     cancel it by pressing the ESC key.  Now any illegal range is
  437.     ignored.
  438.  
  439. 17. If ESC is pressed while the program is printing a graph, the
  440.     printing process is interrupted and an appropriate message is
  441.     displayed on the screen.
  442.  
  443. 18. A problem was corrected that would result in the titles being
  444.     sheared when printing a large graph in landscape orientation.
  445.  
  446. 19. A correction was made to the contour graph, so that when printing in
  447.     landscape, the contours are shaded properly.
  448.  
  449. 20. The font definitions used in graphics were enhanced to correct
  450.     problems with some of the characters like '*', '-', '_', etc.
  451.  
  452. 21. A smaller font (6x6) was defined to accomodate previewing text and
  453.     graphics combined print ranges on the screen.
  454.  
  455. +22. A modification was made to the Help engine to correct the problem of
  456.      ending back to DOS if the 'Statistics' topic was selected, because
  457.      the maximum # of lines allocated to hold each topic was less than
  458.      what was needed for that topic.
  459.  
  460. +23. A modification was made to the Help engine to eliminate extranneous
  461.      color bars that appeared on the right of the screen while scrolling
  462.      through the text for a topic.
  463.  
  464. +24. A modification was made to the Help engine to sort the 'dBase'
  465.      topics in the list with no regard for upper/lower case.
  466.  
  467. -25. A correction was made to ensure that the .RLN file, containing the
  468.      new graphics fonts, is loaded from the same directory as the
  469.      program, rather than the current default directory.  Prior to this
  470.      correction, if the program was started from a sub-directory that
  471.      did not contain the .RLN file, and the user tried to view graphics,
  472.      the program might hang-up.
  473.  
  474. -26. A modification was made to the Hi-Lo graph, so that now the line
  475.      thickness may be modified by the user.
  476.  
  477. -27. A correction was made to avoid a possible hang-up problem if the
  478.      user tried to delete more than one named graph from a worksheet
  479.      file. This correction was actually for a more generic problem that
  480.      might manifest itself any time a pick box was used (like when
  481.      selecting video modes, or printer drivers, etc.), with
  482.      unpredictable results.
  483.  
  484. -28. The External user function module was enhanced so that it now
  485.      allows internal AS-EASY-AS string functions to be used in the User
  486.      Function definitions.  Earlier releases would return a corrupt
  487.      string if the user attempted to use a string function in such a
  488.      definition in the .USR file.
  489.  
  490. *29. The Regression module was modified to ensure that if the user
  491.      selected to perform a regression on a data set with constant Y
  492.      values (horizontal line), the program will return a constant as
  493.      the function definition.  If the user specifies a data set with
  494.      constant X values, @ERR is returned as this data would not
  495.      correspond to a valid y=f(x) functional relationship.
  496.  
  497. *30. A correction was made to the BESSELJ function because it was
  498.      discovered that incorrect values were being returned if the value of
  499.      the X argument was greater than 8.
  500.  
  501. *31. A modification was made to the external user function module to
  502.      permit the use of some special functions in which the passed
  503.      argument is a direct cell address (e.g., the function @CELL and
  504.      @CELLPT).
  505.  
  506. Modifications in AS-EASY-AS  v5.70c
  507. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  508.  1. Two new commands were added to the 3D Graph Scale menu, Z-Skip and
  509.     X-Skip.  These commands permit the user to specify a number N so that
  510.     only every N-th division is displayed in X and Z-axes labeling.
  511.  
  512.  2. A modification was made to the 3D Graphics routine to eliminate a
  513.     problem where if the shift Key was pressed while viewing a graph, the
  514.     program would go into the view modify mode but a status bar for the
  515.     keyboard shifted state keys would appear on the screen.
  516.  
  517.  3. A correction was made to the @ROUND function to eliminate a problem
  518.     where the system would lock up if the user inadvertently specified a
  519.     very larger number of decimal places for rounding (hundreds or
  520.     thousands of decimal places!)
  521.  
  522.  4. A modification was made to the new integral functions (@INTG), to
  523.     make certain that if an external user defined function was used in
  524.     the argument, the program returns an error message.  (It should be
  525.     re-emphasized that NO user defined functions can be used with the
  526.     @INTG function).
  527.  
  528.  5. A minor correction was made to an error introduced during the new
  529.     implementation of the @CELL and @CELLPT functions (which was done to
  530.     permit their use in external user defined functions).  This
  531.     correction ensures that the recalculation in user defined functions
  532.     did NOT stop at the first occurrence of the function.
  533.  
  534.  6. A correction was made to the Bar graph routine so that the bar
  535.     direction does not seem reversed if the Y-Range values consist of a
  536.     narrow range of very large values.
