On-Disk Documentation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN. This is a
ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.
Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is
indeed on your default directory. Then, to print this manual:
(1) Make sure that the your printer is ON and there is enough
paper in it (the manual is about 110 pages).
(2) From the DOS prompt, type
COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
then you need to use the command COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your
printer is connected to).
INSTALL.EXE 26706 30-Oct-1995 01:11p 51BE0A7B
===== Installation =====================================
The installation procedure for AS-EASY-AS is quite simple. The
package includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the
entire process. You will need about 1.2 MB of available disk space on
the hard drive on which you plan to install AS-EASY-AS.
The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
AS-EASY-AS.
INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
o Place the AS-EASY-AS distribution diskette in the
appropriate diskette drive.
o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
at the MS-DOS command, "a:" press ENTER and then type "install"
and press ENTER again
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The program
will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy the AS-
EASY-AS files to that directory. If you received AS-EASY-AS on
two diskettes, you will need to insert Disk 2 in the diskette drive
when asked to do so. The program will make no other changes;
specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys
files.
INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
If you downloaded AS-EASY-AS from a BBS (or received it in the form of
archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
following steps.
o Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
perform this step. If not, you should be able to obtain
directions for this from the same source from which you received
the package.
o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted. For
example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
the AS-EASY-AS package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would log to the C:
drive, change to the TEMPDIR directory, type "install" (without
the double quotes), and then press ENTER.
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The program
will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy the AS-
EASY-AS files to that directory. The program will make no other
changes; specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or
config.sys files.
When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed AS-EASY-AS
(C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.
YOU'RE READY TO GO
Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the documents
(filename extension "doc", "txt" and "man") which have been installed.
We hope you enjoy the program.
IMPORTANT Note(s):
If you Install and run AS-EASY-AS from a diskette, without Expanded
memory (EMS), or if the /NE command line switch is used, and you remove
the AS-EASY-AS program disk from the drive while the program is
running, you will get an error message and will be instructed to
re-insert the disk.
===== New Features =====================================
This section documents features that did not make it to the
printed version of the addenda to the user's manual, as well as new
enhancements and modifications to subsequent releases.
Modifications in AS-EASY-AS v5.70a
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Multivariate Regression
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A new, powerful feature added to AS-EASY-AS v5.7 is multivariate
regression. The program may regress up to three independent
variables. When selecting the X range (under Data, Regression), up to
three columns of data may be selected. When you select Coefficients,
the submenu that appears prior to the actual coefficients, allows you
to select any of the Enabled three independent variables, which are
set by the program depending on the number of columns that have been
selected as the X range. For SINGLE variable regression, only
Variable #1 should be enabled!
As an example, assuming that all three independent variables are
used, the regression could result in a complex function like,
f(x,y,z) = a + b1*x + c1*x^2 + d1*x^3 + e1*x^4 + m1*x^5 +
n1*SQRT(x) + p1*LN(x) + r1*EXP(x) +
b2*y + c2*y^2 + d2*y^3 + e2*y^4 + m2*y^5 +
n2*SQRT(y) + p2*LN(y) + r2*EXP(y) +
b3*z + c3*z^2 + d3*z^3 + e3*z^4 + m3*z^5 +
n3*SQRT(z) + p3*LN(z) + r3*EXP(z)
where a, b1, c1,...n3, p3, r3 are coefficients
calculated by the data regression process
Note that although in this example we use x,y,z as the variables, for
clarity, the general case (and AS-EASY-AS) refer to the three
variables as X1, X2 and X3, and the calculated coefficients are
labelled accordingly.
It should also be noted that due to the complexity of the calculated
formula, AS-EASY-AS will not construct that formula as part of the
calculated output if the built formula string is to exceed the
maximum number of characters that may be accommodated in a single
cell. Instead, a message that the formula is too large will be
displayed.
2. Color Attributes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ranges of cells may now be assigned a user selected foreground and
background color using the /Range, cOlor command.
3. Color Printing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New printer drivers have been developed and included in the program,
including color printer drivers for the HP Deskjet 5xx series and the
Panasonic KX-Pxxxx series printers with the color option.
4. MenuCFG Program
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order to allow maximum flexibility, a new utility program is now
provided with AS-EASY-AS that permits the user to change the menu
structure and the menu commands used by the program. Details on how
to use this program (MENUCFG.EXE), are provided in the text file
MENUCFG.DOC which should be extracted during the installation
process.
It is important to note that changing the menu structure and/or the
menu commands is a very powerful option that should NOT be taken
lightly! If you modify the menu file, macro based spreadsheets might
not work properly since they are based on the first letter of
commands and sequences that have now changed. We strongly recommend
that before you attempt any modifications of the menu structure, you
make a copy of the original ASEASY.MNU file and store it in a safe
place. That way, if you encounter problems with the newly created
file, you may always replace it with the one stored away.
5. 3D Graph Type
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A new type of 3D graph was added last minute, the Contour type. If
selected, the program sub-divides each 3D facet which results in a
smoother color transition.
Modifications in AS-EASY-AS v5.70b
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The format of the values displayed in the X and Z axes in the 3D
graph, are controlled by the format of the cell containing the first
Z and first X values (first column and first row values), in the
selected data.
2. The font used in labeling the 3D graph axes was modified to give
the same perspective as the graph.
3. The menu structure is now loaded when the program is started and is
stored in EMS, thus making about 7k more conventional memory
available for storing worksheet data.
4. Three new keys are active when displaying a 3D graph, and after
selecting I to change the viewing parameters.
A - Pressing A dynamically changes the width of the X-Axis
B - Pressing B dynamically changes the width of the Z-Axis
C - Pressing C dynamically changes the width of the Y-Axis
5. If the Range protection is ON, then the contents of protected
(locked) cells are NOT displayed in the panel area. Instead, the
Word *Protected* is displayed when the cursor is on a locked cell.
6. A new command was implemented under the 3D Graph, Axis command.
The new, 'Bands' command allows the user to select how many colors to
be used in mapping the 3D facets when creating a 3D surface plot.
7. The commands displayed when the user presses I while a 3D graph is
displayed were re-positioned so that they are not overwritten by the
horizontal separating line when in VESA mode.
8. An error was corrected that would temporarily hide the contents of
cells when highlighting a range. The extent of hiding would depend
on the width of the adjacent cells and the string content length.
9. A modification was made to the way the pointer is anchored if a
print range is highlighted and the period (.) key is pressed to
access the four corner cells of the range. The highlighted range is
now re-positioned to maximize the viewed portion on the screen.
10. The color DeskJet print driver was modified to eliminate the problem
of printing a solid black band when printing graphs with a DJ560.
11. The painting direction when displaying a 3D surface graph, now
depends on the orientation of the graph, so as to give a better
perspective due to the way the hidden surfaces are treated.
12. When entering a worksheet password, the entry is now masked and
asterisks are echoed, for increased security.
13. If the user configuration color dialog is entered and the current
color is black on black, the box highlighting the selected color(s)
is now visible.
14. New half-tone bands are now used when printing 3D graphs on a B&W
printer. (Earlier version used single half-tone pattern).
15. A modification was made so that if a laserjet printer driver is
selected (under, /User, Config, Printer), the page length is
automatically set to 60 lines per page. It should be noted that the
user may still override that and set a different page length under
/PrintTo, Printer, Options, Margins, Pagelength, if desired.
16. A correction was made to avoid the problem of getting an illegal
print range if the user accidentally entered a special character
(@,>,<,...), while entering the print range, and then trying to
cancel it by pressing the ESC key. Now any illegal range is
ignored.
17. If ESC is pressed while the program is printing a graph, the
printing process is interrupted and an appropriate message is
displayed on the screen.
18. A problem was corrected that would result in the titles being
sheared when printing a large graph in landscape orientation.
19. A correction was made to the contour graph, so that when printing in
landscape, the contours are shaded properly.
20. The font definitions used in graphics were enhanced to correct
problems with some of the characters like '*', '-', '_', etc.
21. A smaller font (6x6) was defined to accomodate previewing text and
graphics combined print ranges on the screen.
+22. A modification was made to the Help engine to correct the problem of
ending back to DOS if the 'Statistics' topic was selected, because
the maximum # of lines allocated to hold each topic was less than
what was needed for that topic.
+23. A modification was made to the Help engine to eliminate extranneous
color bars that appeared on the right of the screen while scrolling
through the text for a topic.
+24. A modification was made to the Help engine to sort the 'dBase'
topics in the list with no regard for upper/lower case.
-25. A correction was made to ensure that the .RLN file, containing the
new graphics fonts, is loaded from the same directory as the
program, rather than the current default directory. Prior to this
correction, if the program was started from a sub-directory that
did not contain the .RLN file, and the user tried to view graphics,
the program might hang-up.
-26. A modification was made to the Hi-Lo graph, so that now the line
thickness may be modified by the user.
-27. A correction was made to avoid a possible hang-up problem if the
user tried to delete more than one named graph from a worksheet
file. This correction was actually for a more generic problem that
might manifest itself any time a pick box was used (like when
selecting video modes, or printer drivers, etc.), with
unpredictable results.
-28. The External user function module was enhanced so that it now
allows internal AS-EASY-AS string functions to be used in the User
Function definitions. Earlier releases would return a corrupt
string if the user attempted to use a string function in such a
definition in the .USR file.
*29. The Regression module was modified to ensure that if the user
selected to perform a regression on a data set with constant Y
values (horizontal line), the program will return a constant as
the function definition. If the user specifies a data set with
constant X values, @ERR is returned as this data would not
correspond to a valid y=f(x) functional relationship.
*30. A correction was made to the BESSELJ function because it was
discovered that incorrect values were being returned if the value of
the X argument was greater than 8.
*31. A modification was made to the external user function module to
permit the use of some special functions in which the passed
argument is a direct cell address (e.g., the function @CELL and
@CELLPT).
Modifications in AS-EASY-AS v5.70c
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Two new commands were added to the 3D Graph Scale menu, Z-Skip and
X-Skip. These commands permit the user to specify a number N so that
only every N-th division is displayed in X and Z-axes labeling.
2. A modification was made to the 3D Graphics routine to eliminate a
problem where if the shift Key was pressed while viewing a graph, the
program would go into the view modify mode but a status bar for the
keyboard shifted state keys would appear on the screen.
3. A correction was made to the @ROUND function to eliminate a problem
where the system would lock up if the user inadvertently specified a
very larger number of decimal places for rounding (hundreds or
thousands of decimal places!)
4. A modification was made to the new integral functions (@INTG), to
make certain that if an external user defined function was used in
the argument, the program returns an error message. (It should be
re-emphasized that NO user defined functions can be used with the
@INTG function).
5. A minor correction was made to an error introduced during the new
implementation of the @CELL and @CELLPT functions (which was done to
permit their use in external user defined functions). This
correction ensures that the recalculation in user defined functions
did NOT stop at the first occurrence of the function.
6. A correction was made to the Bar graph routine so that the bar
direction does not seem reversed if the Y-Range values consist of a
narrow range of very large values.
7. A modification was made to the @ROUND function to make sure that
when rounding negative integer values, the user did not end up with
decimals.
8. A modification was made to the Fraction cell formatting, so that 1/1
fractions are no longer displayed. In earlier versions, results
displayed as 5-1/1, or 18-1/1 (instead of 6 and 19), were sometimes
possible.
9. A modification was made to the PIC and HPGL graphics output modules
to correct a problem with the graph background being black when such
files were imported to WordPerfect.
10. A correction was made to the 3D Graphics module so that the back
side and bottom panels of the displayed graph are not the same
color as the background.
11. A modification was made to the limits checking portion of the
internal calculation engine, to avoid the situation where an ERR
might be unexplainably returned because the limits checking was
being done on the exponents of the values.
12'. A correction was made to the statistics module to eliminate an
error introduced in the latest release that might make @Q
statistical functions return erroneous reults.
13". A modification was made to correct an error that was inadvertently
introduced in an earlier release, whereas the @SDT function would
not calculate correctly due to the variable holding the item count
in the range being overwritten.
14". A modification was made to ensure that worksheets created with
earlier versions of the program retained the manual/auto
recalculation flag when retrieved with version 5.70.
Modifications in AS-EASY-AS v5.70d
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. A modification was made to the PostScript printer driver to
eliminate the problem of printing the complete data ranges even when
the X and Y axes limits did not match the respective ranges.
2. The macro command parser for the {let...} macro command was modified
to check if the specified target is a valid range name only after it
has failed to convert it to a value. In earlier releases, the
parser would fail if, for example, {let B1,B2} was executed and B1
contained the entry: '96SALES.
3. A correction was made so that now erasing a range does not change
the background color of the erased cells to that specified for
labels.
4. A new macro keyword was added {Help} to correspond to the F1
function key.
5. A correction was made so that when a File, Erase command is
executed,the deleted filename does NOT appear to become the default
file name for the current worksheet.
6. Changes were made to a number of message strings that appear when a
command is highlighted (e.g., File, Export, Quoted...).
7. The pound character was included in the new ASEASY Graphics font
files to accommodate our U.K. customers. It's character #129 in all
font sets in the ASEASY.RLN file.
8. A modification was made to the cell protection scheme, so that now
if F2 (edit) is pressed while the cursor is on a protected cell, a
blank string is returned.
9. A correction was made to the math module to eliminate the problem of
returning @ERR if a zero was multiplied by -1.
10. The @INTG function was modified so that if the argument @X is not
enclosed in quotes, then it's assumed that the function is a
constant.
11. A correction was made to the macro module to re-enable the {NAME}
macro command. This macro command executes the macro without a
prompt.
12. Modifications were made to the Graph printing module in order to,
- Increase the Main and Second title spacing
- Increase the X-Axis vertical spacing
- Decrease the Y-Axis horizontal spacing
- Increase the border thickness
13. A correction was made to avoid the problem of misinterpreting the
value entered as the column width if the operation was cancelled with
the ESC key.
14. The Label prefix is now stripped from user defined menu entries,
regardless of the current prefix setting. This used to create
problems when a {menujump...} macro was executed.
15. The X and Z axes labels are now correctly plotted when assigning a
bar, plot or pyramid 3D graph.
-- End.

===== About VENDINFO Files =============================
Each VENDINFO.DIZ file contains extensive information about a product.
This "human-readable" section is followed by a compressed data record
useable by automated tools. The data record allows BBSes and other
distributors to automate package handling, and provides users with a
wealth of product information. VENDINFO tools (free viewer for users,
free or inexpensive processors for distributors, editors for authors)
are available from many sources, including the originators of VENDINFO:
